Relay For Life 2010

Charity Work

Relay for Life
October 9th & 10th
Oriel Park, Dundalk.

On Saturday, October 9th at 6pm, hundreds of people gathered together in Oriel park, Dundalk to embark on a very special 24-hour journey. Relay for Life is an overnight, community celebration and a unique, empowering and fun event. At the heart of Relay is the opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have left us.

Teams of people take turns walking around a track in the Complex. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 24-hour event. Otherwise team members are free to socialise, play games, dance and participate in lots of fun activities!
Two of the highlights during the Relay event are the Survivors' Lap and the Candle of Hope Ceremony. The Survivors' Lap is an inspirational start to the event where cancer survivors of all ages are invited to begin the Relay by walking the first lap of the course, cheered on by family, friends, and teams from the community.

The Candle of Hope Ceremony took place at 10pm. Before the event everyone in the community is invited to dedicate a Candle of Hope to someone they know who has been touched by cancer. The candles are set around the track and lit by participants. It is during this time that the true meaning of Relay really hits home.
All funds raised through sponsorship and fundraising will go to support the Irish Cancer Society's services in Co Louth, and to support the Society's national programme to acheive world-class cancer services, ensuring fewer people get cancer and those that do have better outcomes. So far the event has raised €70,000 with more money expected to come in to raise this amount to over €100,000.

The De La Salle had a team at the event consisting of
Seamus Corcoran, Wayne O' Shaughnessy, Conor Mc Crave, Dominique Morton, David Brennan, Eamonn Rodgers. Past pupils such as James Kieran, Breandan Coleman, Conor Smyth and Gavin Malone also helped out on the night.

The students carried out many fundraising events in school such as a bake sale, a play station competition and a raffle for a signed Louth jersey. On the night the students had a stall selling tea, coffee and buns. They also received individual sponsorship and managed to raise €3,000.
Well done to everybody who took part in this very worthy cause.
