We have had a very busy first term in the maths department. We had a fun week of activities during Maths Week, from 10th to 17th of October. We ran competitions each day and held a grand final on Friday. Our daily winners were David Brennan, 5th year, Killian O'Connor, 3rd year, Fiach Murphy, Michael Lavery and Joseph Mullen all 1st years. The winners of the final were Paul Tynan 2nd year, Richard O' Hagan 6th year and Michael Lavery 1st year. Almost all classes got involved, particularly in the daily competition and thanks to all the teachers who allowed their students participate.
Our Transition years went to a lecture/workshop in DKIT, also as part of maths week . They enjoyed the experience and found it challenging.
A number of our students are presently taking part in Olympiad training in UCD. They have completed half the course now, having been in UCD on 4th 11th and 18th of December. The course is challenging and involves our students doing lots of extra work in maths . It is an invaluable experience for all the participants. The students involved are: Evan Mc Adam, Robert Neary, Philip Larney, Kyle Moran and Declan Mc Donnell. It is hard work and we thank the lads for getting up early on a saturday morning and taking part.
A new course in maths is coming on stream next year for all incoming students in 1st and 5th year. All of the teachers had inservice this term and more inservice will be available for next term. There is an emphasis on discovery learning. We are all on a learning curve now.
The maths department wishes all our students a happy and safe Christmas.
