HEALTHY EATING WEEK
11TH - 15TH OCTOBER
A very successful Healthy eating week was held from the 11th - 15th October. Fun activities took place at each lunch break with both students and staff taking part. There was a huge interest in the junior cookery competition that it had to be held over two lunch breaks. Students really excelled and demonstrated some gifted talent by producing superbly tasting dishes. The emphasis of the week was to create healthy dinners on a budget of €10. Students really stepped up to the challenge and Jamie Oliver better watch out in a few years time. The cookery competitions definitely proved tough to judge with many deserving winners in each competition.
The winning teams were:Senior Competition: Conor Callan and Cian Taggart (5th Year)
Junior Competition: Joint first place - Sean Brennan and Jordan Mackin (2nd Year) Paul Tynan and Robert Lynch (3rd Year)
Senior cookery competition: Conor Callan and Cian Taggart (5th Year)
A healthy food table quiz had a large turnout of students and staff. Scoring was close between the six teams but the overall winners were Cian Murphy, Evin Quigley, Sean Murray (1st Year) and Mr. O' Connor.
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the teachers Ready, Steady, Cook (de la Salle style). Fourteen teachers took part in pairs. Mr. Mc Keown, Ms Meehan, Ms. Devlin, Mr. Mc Guinness, Ms. Murray, Mr. Renaghan, Ms. Mc Adam, Mr. O' Naraigh, Ms. Hoyne, Mr. Carey, Mr. Staunton, Mr. Bruton, Ms. Campbell and Mr. Davern.
An abundance of students turned out to watch the teachers cook. Each group was given five ingredients on the day and they could also pick three additional ingredients from the store cupboard. Mouth watering dishes were created and the teachers really showed some hidden talents with the students being very impressed. Mr. Brennan, Andrew Smyth (6th Year) and Sean Beehan (2nd Year) had the unenviable task of judging a winner and after some deliberation Ms. Devlin and Mr. Mc Guinness were declared the 2010 winners of Ready, Steady, cook.
The week highlighted to the students the importance of eating healthy and the cookery competitions particularly demonstrated the tasteful cheap dishes that can easily and quickly be made.
Well done to all the students and staff who took part and helped to make the week such a success. Many thanks to the Home Economics Department Ms. Mc Hale, Ms. Minnock, Ms. Sarsfield and Ms. Mc Adam who organised the week.
