Houses of the Oireachtas Education Outreach Visit,
January 2010

Third Year students were given a unique insight into the workings of the Irish Government recently with a visit by Ms. Sharon Murphy, Education Outreach Officer, Houses of the Oireachtas. Sharon conducted a workshop with the 3-I class and built on the work that the students had already done in CSPE class on the topic of Democracy.

This was supported by a visit from one of the local TDs, Deputy Fergus O'Dowd. Fergus spoke to the class about the life and work of a TD and fielded questions from the students during a lively question and answer session. A very relaxed and good-humoured session was enjoyed by all and will help the students as they prepare for their CSPE examination this summer.

3-I would like to thank both Fergus and Sharon for their input, assistance and advice.

Charity Work

3rd Year CSPE Project work - Dundalk Dog Rescue
March 2011

As part of the C.S.P.E. course all third years have to complete an Action Project. For 3E's Action Project we decided to fundraise for the local charity of Dundalk Dog Rescue.
What is the Dundalk Dog Rescue?
DDR is an entirely voluntary non-profit making organisation set up five years ago by a group of ordinary people in the community. Their aim is to rescue as many unwanted dogs from the local pound as possible. DDR prevented the deaths of over 700 loyal companions last year. The total number of dogs killed in Irish pounds over the last 3 years was 29,224 (Dept. of Environment figures). The vast majority of these were healthy, young, abandoned, unwanted pets.

DDR incurs average weekly running costs of €500. Examples of the costs involved in running the rescue include: vaccinating a dog - €20, kennelling a dog for 1 week €42, neuter/spaying a dog €100/€120.

3E's fundraising for DDR raised
€1,322!
We fundraised in the following ways: Bag Pack in Dunnes Stores, a bake sale in our school and our class sold calendars which contained the pictures of some of the dogs that Dundalk Dog Rescue rescued.
When we had all the money counted we invited DDR into our school to present the money to them. We got to meet two dogs that had recently been rescued, Lottie and Marvin. Both were very friendly, happy dogs. It was great to see first-hand how we could make a difference and help give dogs like these a chance to have save, happy lives.
3.E werevery happy to help Dundalk Dog Rescue and we would encourage others to try to help this worthy cause also.
