100,000 Euro Scholarship for De La Salle
Students in De la Salle College can look forward to scholarships for 3rd level education worth 100,000 Euro over the next 5 years. The scholarship fund was announced at the College's Annual Student Awards Ceremony by past pupil and Dundalk native, George Moore. Mr. Moore was invited back to his Alma Mater to receive the Illustrious Alumni Award which recognises significant achievement by a distinguished former student of De La Salle.
George was born in Dundalk in 1951. He attended St. Malachy's primary school before attending De la Salle College where he sat his Leaving Cert in 1968. His family has a long association with De la Salle and his uncle, Jim Matthews, became a De la Salle brother and lived most of his life in Malaysia. George studied in UCD before completing his doctorate in America. An internationally renowned entrepreneur and businessman, he is Chairman of Targus Information Corporation. He is deeply involved in a number of business and civic activities including Chairman of Erne Heritage Holdings that include Belleek Pottery, Galway Crystal and Aynsley China. In addition, he is a member of the Board of the Ireland America Economic Advisory Board and of the New Ireland Fund.
His contribution to business and his work on behalf of Ireland has been recognised on many occasions. In 1991, University College Dublin awarded him its "Outstanding Alumnus Award" while in 2007, Queen Elizabeth recognised his contribution to the Northern Ireland economy and his international work on behalf of Ireland with an honorary CBE.
The contribution of more than 130 students to life in De la Salle was recognised at the Awards Ceremony. Awards ranged over the academic, sporting and a wide range of other extra-curricular activities. The Senior Student of the Year Award went to Friedrich Dunne. Declan McDonnell won the Junior Student for 2009. Aidan McNally won the award for Senior Sportsperson while the outstanding Junior Sportsperson was David Maguire. The Lasallian Spirit Award, given to the student who best exemplifies the De La Salle ethos in his contribution to school life, was won by Dubhaltach Mulvenna.
